Reference architecture for industrial communication

Industrial Communication for Factories (IC4F) dealt with the development of a reference architecture for industrial communication, including 5G, with a focus on IT security, reliability, real-time capability and system resilience.

Contents of the completed project

The IC4F (Industrial Communication for Factories) project aimed to develop solutions for secure, robust and real-time capable communication in the manufacturing industry. By the end of the project in 2020, 15 project partners from industry and research had developed a technology kit for a trustworthy and interoperable infrastructure.

Key technologies from the areas of 5G, multi-access edge computing (MEC), cloud computing, virtualization, industrial monitoring and analytics were used. The project results are intended to serve as a guide for selecting the right ICT technologies in line with the new Industry 4.0 requirements and the specific migration approach.

Further information can be found on the official project website.

The project received funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) as part of the PAiCE funding program.
