About the project

Modern gearbox technologies offer maximum efficiency with minimal mechanical play. The low tolerances of less than 10 micrometers place high demands on gearbox assembly. This is typically done manually by skilled workers at monotonous workstations. Due to the shortage of skilled workers and the unattractive, repetitive nature of the work, an automation solution is therefore being sought. To develop an automation solution, the process experts from Daimler Truck are cooperating with the automation specialists from Agile Robots in this project to jointly implement an innovative application. The ARENA2036 research platform forms the basis of this collaboration and serves as a joint laboratory space for testing and further developing the solution in the final project phase.

Aims of the project

The aim of the project is to develop and investigate an automation solution for gearbox assembly. The focus is on critical pin assembly, for which innovative hybrid force/position control systems are being designed. An intelligent gripper is being developed for inserting the gears, which can securely grip different gear types and position them precisely in the narrow gearbox housing to enable the studs to be inserted. The AutoGBA project is evaluating the use of state-of-the-art, skill-based control systems and high-precision force control systems with a view to future automated series production.
