A Research Platform for Integrated Hydrogen Energy Systems
WAVE-H2 develops and studies energy systems that intelligently integrate electricity, heat, and gases. The focus is on hydrogen technologies, energy storage, district heating networks, and digital solutions for operational management. The research platform enables the development of individual components as well as their integration into complex overall systems. Thanks to its modular design, generators, storage systems, and consumers can be flexibly combined and tested under realistic operating conditions.
Digital twins combine measurement data with simulations and enable a comprehensive assessment of system behavior. AI-powered algorithms help optimize efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and CO₂ emissions. Companies, research institutions, and public sector entities gain access to a state-of-the-art testing and development infrastructure that enables the development and validation of new technologies, from feasibility studies through to demonstrations in industrial settings.
Shortening Innovation Cycles and Accelerating the Energy Transition
The goal of WAVE-H2 is to develop resilient, scalable, and locally self-sufficient energy systems based on hydrogen. The platform combines basic research with industrial testing, thereby creating a seamless innovation process from concept to practical application. Research results from the innovation modules are validated in a networked energy system under real-world conditions.
At the same time, insights gained from operations are fed directly back into the further development of new technologies. This continuous transfer of knowledge significantly shortens development cycles and facilitates the transition of innovative solutions into industrial applications. In this way, WAVE-H2 supports companies and municipalities in developing sustainable energy supply concepts and makes an important contribution to the decarbonization of industrial processes and the transformation of future energy systems.
Overview of Locations
Vaihingen Campus
This is where new technologies and innovations are developed, including plasma-catalytic processes for gas conversion, material developments, and preliminary research—for example, in the field of ammonia electrolysis.

The facility on the Vahingen Campus officially opened in January 2026 and is located in the immediate vicinity of the ARENA2036 e.V. research campus.
