Research focus on data spaces

data spaces are the backbone of the digital collaboration of the future. They enable companies, organizations and public institutions to exchange data in a secure, controlled and sovereign manner. The focus in ARENA2036 is on open source technologies and standardized interfaces to make innovative data ecosystems usable and scalable.

The ARENA2036 testbed - real laboratory for data spaces

A central element of the research focus is the ARENA2036 testbed for data spaces. Here, data space-based applications and services are developed, tested and demonstrated under realistic conditions. In close cooperation between industry, research and start-ups, tangible solutions are created in the testbed along specific use cases - from machine connectivity to edge and cloud integration to EDC-based data exchange. The testbed thus acts as a bridge between theory and practice to test and further develop technological components such as data connectors, interoperability services and governance models.

Thematic focus
Data interoperability and standardization (e.g. EDC, IDS, AAS)
Data sovereignty and governance concepts
Trustworthy infrastructures for data spaces
Open source tools for data space(e.g. Tractus-X, Eclipse Dataspace Components)
Use case-driven pilot projects with partners from industry and research
Target group

Open source community
ARENA2036 is the home of the Tractus-X community and host of the Community Days. We offer an open space for exchange, collaboration and further development of open source components.

Developers
Developers can get to know and understand data spaces step by step in our sandbox. Building on this, the environment can be used for integration tests and end-to-end tests to validate their own applications in realistic scenarios.

Industry users
The ARENA2036-X Sandbox gives industry users the opportunity to test the mechanisms of Catena-X in a practical setting. This allows them to gain initial experience with data rooms and identify potential benefits at an early stage.

Research and educational institutions
We provide individual demonstration data rooms as a basis for research projects. This allows projects to be focused and accelerated and knowledge to be gained in a realistic environment.

Ongoing projects
Project Description Project page
Transfer-X Transfer-X is a learning platform with modules on the topic of data spaces. ARENA2036 develops its own learning content, imparts practical data space knowledge and thus supports the development of skills in industry and research. Link
Construct-X Construct-X focuses on the use of data rooms in the construction industry. ARENA2036 takes the lead in developing the demonstration and test environment to enable data-driven innovation in construction projects. Link
KI-D Development of a shared IT and data space program specifically designed to accelerate the training of AI models for start-ups and enterprises Link
ApeiroRA ApeiroRA stands for "Apeiro Reference Architecture" and is a project within the framework of IPCEI-CIS that aims to create an open, flexible and secure blueprint for a pan-European cloud edge continuum. In the ApeiroRA project, ARENA2036 serves as a test environment for testing and validating the project results. Link
8ra The 8ra initiative is a strategic European initiative to design a robust, open and interoperable digital infrastructure. It acts as a framework project for the IPCEI-CIS and brings together over 120 partners from industry, research and infrastructure from around 12 member states. The goal is a Multi-Provider Cloud-Edge Continuum (MPCEC), i.e. an environment in which cloud and edge resources work together seamlessly and services function interoperably across different providers.
