Virtual Commissioning & Process Design
How can existing simulation and control tools be integrated into an open 3D metaverse environment without media discontinuities or loss of information? The ARENA2036 research hall demonstrates how Virtual Commissioning (VIBN) is transferred directly from specialized control environments into collaborative 3D scenes. At the heart of the project is the synchronous mapping of PLC logic, robot kinematics, and cross-vendor interactive visualization.
Real-time interface via the Omniverse Connector
Simulation and control data are integrated directly from the ISG-VirtuOS engineering software. To avoid duplicate modeling and manual data configuration, Kempten University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with ISG and the project partners, developed an Omniverse connector (USD generation + synchronization layer via a CORBA server) based on a client-server architecture.
This connector reads joint angles, rotations, and spatial transformation matrices in real time, transmits them, and injects the structure into geometric OpenUSD models. As a result, automation engineers’ familiar workflows in ISG-virtuos remain fully intact, while the control signals simultaneously move the virtual scene on the target platform.
Omniverse Integration & Collision Analysis
The result is a highly accurate digital twin that is accessible not only to PLC experts but also to factory planners, ergonomics specialists, and decision-makers. Maintenance scenarios, predictive collision checks, and cycle time analyses can thus be simulated and optimized in real time without interrupting physical production.
