DIN 72036 now available in English

DIN 72036:2024-06: Standard for the automation of wire harness production now also available in English

The Standardization Initiative Wire Harness (SILS) proudly announces the publication of the English translation of DIN 72036:2024-06. Under the title "Road vehicles - Automation of wiring harness manufacturing", the standard is now available to an international audience. The original German version of DIN 72036, which was published in June 2024, has already provided important impetus for the automation of wiring harness manufacturing. The English translation is intended to extend this success and promote international cooperation.

With 60 practical design guidelines, DIN 72036 focuses on the automation-friendliness of wiring harnesses. These range from requirements for minimum distances to material properties and take into account digital data formats such as the KBL (wire harness list) and the VEC (Vehicle Electric Container). The standard thus creates a basis for integrating rule checkers into development tools. This means that design decisions can be checked automatically during development.

The publication of the standard in English makes it possible to implement the standards on an international scale. The aim is to make wire harness production more efficient, cost-effective and future-proof - even in high-wage countries such as Germany. Everyone involved in the value chain will benefit from the standardized specifications, from the automotive industry and assembly companies to component and machine manufacturers.

Work on the next version of the standard, version 2, is already in full swing. DIN working group 51, supported by the SILS initiative, is currently developing the content, with a focus on reviewing and expanding existing design guidelines. The publication of the German version of the standard version 2 is planned for the end of 2025, while the English translation is due to follow in spring 2026. This update will not only continue the success of the first version, but also create the basis for the further internationalization and automation of wire harness production.
