THE Aerospace LÄND takes off
Kick-off event at the ARENA2036 research campus
On July 6, 2023, the ARENA2036 research campus at the University of Stuttgart experienced a historic moment and hosted the kick-off event for Baden-Württemberg's new aerospace strategy "THE Aerospace LÄND".
ARENA2036 is not only a prestigious research and development facility, but was also the venue for one of the most important aerospace events of the year on this special day. The research campus was transformed into an impressive stage for the occasion, where a high-profile guest list, including Minister President Winfried Kretschmann and ESA astronaut Dr. Alexander Gerst, officially presented the new strategy.
"THE Aerospace LÄND" is an ambitious strategy that aims to make the aerospace industry sustainable, digital and cooperative by 2050. The aim is to promote research and development of new technologies, network industrial partners and reduce CO2 emissions in aviation. Minister President Kretschmann emphasized Baden-Württemberg's role in European aerospace: "We want to be at the forefront and play our part in European sovereignty in aerospace."
However, the event was more than just a presentation. It was an interactive meeting where research institutions, start-ups and companies presented their projects and ideas. It was also a special event for the students of the University of Stuttgart. Not only did they get to talk to ESA astronaut Gerst in person, they also presented their own technologies, such as the PAPELL experiment that Gerst took with him on his mission to the ISS in 2018.
Particularly pleasing: numerous other students accepted the invitation to the research campus and followed the presentation with cheers and applause via livestream in front of the building. Their commitment, their projects and their enthusiasm were recognized by both Minister President Kretschmann and ESA astronaut Gerst. The University of Stuttgart's aerospace engineering student council also provided refreshments for the many guests after the official part of the event.
On this day, the ARENA2036 research campus once again demonstrated its outstanding role as a hub for science, industry and politics. The event was a shining example of what such collaboration can look like and the added value it creates for everyone involved, especially students.
