The Wire Harness Standardization Initiative (SILS) at a glance

The Wire Harness Standardization Initiative (SILS) is an industry-wide cooperation for the development of a common technical standard for digitized and automatable wire harness production. Its aim is to establish the DIN 72036 standard as an open, practical and widely applicable basis for the entire industry.

SILS is the result of the " Wire Harness Innovation Initiative" (IILS) a joint project between industry and research in the context of ARENA2036. Following information from the German Federal Cartel Office, the project was restructured - with a clear separation between research & development and standardization. This step was crucial in order to put the standardization work on a secure, transparent and industry-open basis under antitrust law.

A new phase began with the official launch of SILS in the fall of 2023: specific content for DIN 72036 continues to be developed with the participation of OEMs, manufacturers, contact part manufacturers and system providers and presented in the DIN working group AK 51. The standard is therefore not being developed in an ivory tower, but in close coordination with the actual challenges and requirements in practice.

SILS is now organized as a project within ARENA2036, is subject to a clearly defined set of rules for cooperation and enables all interested companies to participate - regardless of size or prior knowledge. The project is financed entirely by the contributions of its partners and is managed in an agile manner along the joint development steps.

From the initial idea to the finished standard: SILS combines technical expertise, industrial relevance and a clear view of the future.
