Next steps
Important foundations for the standard have been laid - V1 and the almost completed V2 provide a solid basis. Nevertheless, key building blocks are still missing in order to fully map the 2035 target vision in a standardized way. Individual chapters need to be further detailed, use cases expanded and results from tests and applications systematically fed back.
There are still gaps in the depth of description, especially for complex connectors, modular assemblies or OEM-specific requirements. Some content is only conceptually conceived, such as the production-oriented modularization of cable harnesses with function-related division, clear transfer points and traceable units.
Many process-relevant parameters such as pinning sequence, cable lengths, space requirements, re-pinning, application reference (HV, LV, HF) or the logical structure of customer-specific cable harnesses are also known - but not yet systematically integrated into the standard structure. The same applies to the reuse potential of pins, common part concepts and modular connectors.
In addition, there are still no clear standards for the digital handling, separation and reconnection of modular wire harness segments - or for the integration of smart production technologies and assistance-supported process steps.
The ongoing work therefore continues to focus on the central issues of the SILS:
- How must a Wire Harness be constructed so that it can be manufactured, tested and assembled automatically?
- What does this mean for the design rules of components and interfaces?
- What parameters does a developer need to have an early overview of in order to recognize automation potential?
- How can a Wire Harness be structurally unbundled, modularized and segmented in an automated manner?
- How can quality assurance be carried out inline - and how are testing processes and traceability integrated in line with standards?
- What do end-to-end digital process chains look like - from design to production?
