Deep Dive Wire Harness: Insight into current developments and opportunities to join in

On June 26, 2025, the Deep Dive on Wire Harness took place, attended by around 25 participants from industry and science. During the two-hour event, current developments in wire harness production were presented and discussed. The agenda included a presentation of the Transformation Hub Wire Harness project and a product explanation using an Audi Q6 e-tron Wire Harness. This was followed by three presentations on the topics of standardization, robotics and sustainability. Finally, hands-on offers for companies and research institutions were presented.

Thematic insights in the Deep Dive

The complexity of wiring harness production was illustrated using the Audi Q6 e-tron wiring harness, as around 70% of the assembly steps are carried out manually, which indicates great potential for automation. The SILS initiative was presented as a solution for reducing the number of variants and enabling scalable automation. The Robotics Challenge 2024 and 2025 promotes the development of automated solutions for wire harness assembly. Finally, the topic of sustainability was addressed, with a life cycle analysis comparing the carbon footprints and recyclability of materials.

Finally, the participation offers of the transformation hub Wire Harness were presented, including participation in the "Green Wiring System" working group and the Robotics Challenge 2025. There is also the opportunity to present yourself in transfer modules or at the innovation forum and to network with other players in the industry. Participation in the SILS initiative was also highlighted as another opportunity to get involved.

Participation offers
  1. Transformation hub Wire Harness: contact point for innovations in the Wire Harnessindustry

The Wire Harness transformation hub is the central point of contact for knowledge transfer in the industry. It offers access to tools such as the industry and research map, the trend radar and the "Green Wiring System" working group. These formats promote the networking of relevant players and support the development of sustainable solutions. In the transfer modules, which include trend outlooks and innovation shows, companies can present their innovative technologies to a specialist audience. The hub connects companies and research institutions with suitable partners and promotes exchange.

  1. DIN 72036: Participate in the standard for automated Wire Harness

Standardization is an essential step in driving forward the automation of wire harness production. DIN 72036 is the basis for automation, especially in the production of wire harnesses in batch size 1. More than 80 design guidelines have already been developed in the Wire Harness Standardization Initiative (SILS). Companies can get involved by becoming members of the SILS initiative and participating in the design and further development of the standards.

  1. Robotics challenge: New solutions for wire harness assembly

The Robotics Challenge offers a platform for developing and testing innovative solutions in wire harness production and assembly. The results from the 2024 and 2025 challenges will provide participants with an opportunity to test and further develop their technologies. The third challenge will start at the end of 2025, where participants will be able to present their prototypes and showcase their solutions at the Wire Harness 2026 innovation forum.

Overview

The Wire Harness Transformation Hub sees itself as an enabler for the transformation towards automated production and resilient supply chains in wire harness production by analyzing industry trends, identifying solutions and actively promoting the exchange between business and science - for example through events. As part of the DeepDive format, we address key challenges facing the industry and showcase practical solutions that have emerged from the hub. The focus is on the topics of automation, robotics and sustainability.

In addition, the "SILS - Standardization Initiative Wire Harness" will be presented as part of the Deep Dive. This initiative aims to develop consistent standards for wiring harness development and production in order to reduce complexity and increase the level of automation.

The DeepDive format not only offers insights into ongoing projects, but also a platform for exchange: companies can dock onto existing activities with their own ideas, technologies or challenges and develop new solutions together.
