AI in Manufacturing

Artificial intelligence is becoming a key technology for industrial production. The Industrial AI research focus at ARENA2036 is investigating how intelligent algorithms and machine learning can make robotics and automation systems more powerful, flexible, and safer. The aim is to transfer AI technologies into practical industrial applications and tap into new innovation potential for production and mobility.

The session provided insights into current developments such as AI-enabled robotics, digital twins, autonomous decision-making, and data-driven production systems. Using concrete demonstrators and projects, it was shown how AI enables adaptive production processes, improves human-robot interaction, and supports complex optimization tasks. Special attention was given to the European AI-MATTERS project, which is establishing a testing and experimentation infrastructure for AI applications in the manufacturing industry.

The goal was to provide companies—especially SMEs—with access to real-world test environments where AI solutions for production and automation can be developed, tested, and validated. The session thus offered insights into current research projects and highlighted opportunities for networking and collaboration within the ARENA2036 industrial AI ecosystem.

Sandip Das is a research scientist at Nokia Bell Labs and specializes in next-generation fixed access networks and converged optical-wireless architectures. His work drives the development of high-performance broadband connections through innovations in PON technologies, virtualized access solutions, and cloud-native networks. Sandip earned his Ph.D. from Trinity College Dublin and has made significant contributions to EU research projects, leading publications, and groundbreaking developments in the fields of optical access, fixed-mobile convergence, and cloud RAN systems.

Alexander Zorn heads the LLM-based Robot Control division at Fraunhofer IAIS. His work focuses on agent-based AI systems and vision-language-action models that translate abstract voice commands into real-world robotic actions. Instead of isolated individual capabilities, he breaks down complex tasks into viable sub-steps using agent systems—with the goal of making robotics production-ready rather than merely suitable for demonstrations.

Muhammad Saeed leads the research-oriented project “AI Matters,” a major initiative that provides advanced technological services to industry partners. His work combines next-generation artificial intelligence, simulation technologies, CAE, and robotics for international applications. Specifically, his research focuses on agent-based AI, spatiotemporal AI, neurosymbolic AI, LLMs, digital twins, AutoML, and quantum-based machine learning. A key priority of these integrations is ensuring data sovereignty and explainability, which enables him to develop secure, transparent, and cognitive frameworks to optimize and autonomously control complex manufacturing processes.

Samed Ajdinović is the group leader for Industrial Control Engineering at the Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Systems (ISW) at the University of Stuttgart. His research focuses on the digital factory, digital twins, and data-driven production and control systems. He also works on the integration of data models and the digital transformation of industrial production processes.

Joao Lopes is a Principal Engineer and serves as Technical Project Manager for 6G system innovation in the CTO’s office at NXP Semiconductors. His primary areas of interest are industrial automation and real-time communication, both in wired and wireless domains. He is active in the IEEE 802.1 working group in the TG TSN (Time Sensitive Networking) area, is the founder and former chair of the OPC UA FX Prototyping working group, and currently serves as co-chair for the Networking area at the OPC Foundation. As an active member of the 5G-ACIA, he has contributed to several technical documents.
