Quantum: Beyond Classical Limits

The technology session “Quantum: Beyond Classical Limits” highlighted quantum technologies as strategic enablers for the next generation of industrial innovations. It provided participants with a concise overview of the technological landscape and its significance for future competitiveness.

From quantum computers and simulations to advanced sensor technology and secure communications, quantum technologies are evolving from cutting-edge research to practical industrial applications. Although the field is still in development, progress is accelerating, making early engagement crucial to creating long-term value.

The concluding group discussion focused on opportunities, industrial implications, and potential models of cooperation, thereby paving the way for partnerships within ARENA2036 and beyond.

Dr. Helmut Fedder is one of the leading pioneers in the field of quantum metrology and is responsible for commercializing key tools that enable quantum research worldwide. He currently serves as CEO of Single Quantum Germany, where he is establishing a new research and development center for quantum technology in Stuttgart for the world’s leading supplier of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs).

Robert Lahmann heads the Customer Success division at Kipu Quantum GmbH. He develops practical tutorials and works closely with customers to help them successfully navigate their quantum journey and realize the resulting value. Kipu Quantum is a German company in the field of quantum artificial intelligence (QAI) that focuses on the development and marketing of industrial quantum products.

Tim Engling is a doctoral student in Prof. Stefanie Barz’s group and conducts research on technologies for quantum communication and quantum computing. His research focuses on integrated photonic chips, which serve as a promising platform for scalable quantum systems. As part of his research, he investigates how photonic qubits in integrated circuits can be precisely controlled and processed, and how quantum information can be efficiently fed into and distributed across quantum networks. His work thus combines integrated photonics, quantum information processing, and the development of future quantum communication networks.

Prof. Anders’ research focuses on improving the performance and miniaturizing sensor systems for a wide range of applications across various fields, from materials science and Industry 4.0 to biomedical engineering. A particular focus is on making quantum sensors usable in everyday life. Through his work, Prof. Anders aims to make quantum technologies—and quantum sensor technology in particular—usable in everyday life. For example, Prof. Anders’s research group has already developed the world’s first portable electron spin resonance spectrometer, which will fundamentally transform the field of free radical detection. Such free radicals play a central role in many fields of application, and their measurement is currently often only possible via surrogate parameters. The interplay between free radicals and antioxidants, for example, directly determines a person’s state of health; but in the semiconductor industry as well, free radicals determine the quality of new energy materials used, for example, in modern solar cells. The research goal is to make high-precision quantum sensors usable in everyday life through basic research with colleagues at the “Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology” (IQST) and in close collaboration with industrial partners.

His focus is on creating trustworthy, interoperable, and future-proof healthcare platforms that empower both patients and organizations. Driven by innovation and guided by strategy, he strives to connect new technologies with real-world impact across the entire healthcare ecosystem.

Dr. Thomas Strohm earned his Ph.D. in 1999 at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, where he conducted theoretical research on high-temperature superconductors. Thomas then joined the corporate research division of Robert Bosch GmbH, where he worked for more than 10 years in software development research and as a systems and software architect. In 2013, he began establishing quantum technology research activities at Bosch. Thomas Strohm is currently Chief Expert for Quantum Technologies at Bosch. Bosch conducts research and development in the fields of quantum computing applications and quantum sensing. In 2020, he played a key role in establishing the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC), of which he is now president. Thomas is also the project coordinator of QOMPASS, the coordination and support initiative of the European Quantum Flagship. He is also a member of the steering committee of the German Consortium for Quantum Technology and Applications (QUTAC). Thomas makes technical contributions to the QUTAC working group on quantum systems as well as to Bosch’s research and development project on quantum magnetometers.

Matthias is an experienced leader in strategic business development at the intersection of technology and sales. He systematically drives the expansion into new markets to fuel long-term growth. He currently leads a team of technology directors that drives the solution and portfolio diversification of Nokia’s network infrastructure business in the transportation, energy, public sector, and enterprise market segments. His achievements to date include building Nokia’s global “Private Wireless for Ports” business from the ground up into a significant revenue driver with dozens of successful customer references, as well as driving the portfolio decision for the new Nokia Core Enterprise Solutions (NCES) to open up a new market segment for the company.
